A painting in progress behaves as if it were a living creature.

In fact, if the process of creation were recorded on film, the painting would literally move around, i.e., it would continue to change.
Especially if the painter, who is changing, destroying, or adding something to the painting, is not shown in the video, the work in progress will appear to be an autonomous living thing.

A finished painting is, in other words, a kind of taxidermy, or perhaps we should call it a kind of "photograph”.
It is a surface on which motion is lost and time is fixed.
But I suppose that is precisely why many artists wish their paintings to appear to be moving even after they are completed.
